The Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has been a tool for people to ease their mind and body for thousands of years. This simple practice of stretching and breathing has been scientifically found to have therapeutic properties. The Mind

If you are feeling stressed or anxious, yoga is one of the best ways to help relieve your stress. In many cases, yoga can help release not only bodily tension, but mental tension as well. When you are forced to focus on your breathing and the way you are bending your body, there leaves little room for external stressors. Instead of feeling weighed down by your thoughts, yoga helps alleviate that weight and replaces it with light, soothing stretches. Also, aside from just how yoga makes you feel, it can also help redirect your thoughts to things that are more positive. For instance, if you’re having a rough time in your life, yoga can redirect your negative feelings of sadness and anger, and transforms them to more positive, hopeful feelings. Putting your body through stretch after stretch can change your outlook on your life and an alternate perspective of your worries and the world around you.

The Body

Yoga has an obvious physical component to it. For instance, yoga is a collection of poses and stretches you must complete. However, though each posture of yoga is physical, some positions are more calming than others. For instance, lightly physical stretches have the ability to soothe the adrenal glands of the body and create a calming effect.
Our bodies need movement. Without stretches, our muscles are not allowed to strengthen. By using yoga as a tool for your body, you can build muscle and get a better understanding of how your body works. Often, when you work out you use your body, but rarely do you take the time to fully understand it and appreciate it. With yoga, you are allowed the opportunity to literally ‘take a breath’ and appreciate the amazing abilities of your body.

Breathing Techniques

Half of yoga, as a practice, is about learning how to breathe. Though you breathe all of the time, the practice of breathing in yoga is entirely different. Most of the time when you breathe, you will take in short breaths; just enough to get enough oxygen in your body that you need to survive. In yoga, your breath is strategically inserted between poses and utilized to its fullest. This means that you will typically take long breaths. By taking longer breaths, this offers your brain and muscles a larger supply of oxygen. Larger breaths will also help relieve stress, release muscle tension, and improve cognitive abilities.

Release Emotional Energy

Negative emotions can be toxic for your body and mind. Yoga helps to relieve those thoughts by offering a healthy distraction. By focusing on the poses and your breathing, you can easily train your brain to think more positively. Yoga focuses on providing you with a sense of security and tranquility. By using yoga techniques, you can adapt your thinking process to include more harmonious emotions.
